The Black Power movement was in full swing and the militant Black Panther group loomed large as a dissenting voice. THE REACTION TO the trailer for I Feel Pretty was quick and brutal. The premise — crudely sketched out — was that Renee, an ‘average’ woman (played by Amy Schumer), suddenly saw herself as beautiful, model beautiful, after falling and hitting her head (not to mention having a fistful of hair ripped out) during an accident at a SoulCycle class. Of course, the rest of the world still saw her as she was — erm, blonde, white, privileged, distinctly-not-fat? — and much hilarity ensued! The full film didn’t, as some suggested it might, present a more rounded picture than the trailer. At a time when Hollywood is obsessed with going bigger (Jurassic World, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man And The Wasp), the fourth Ocean’s film is, refreshingly, going smaller. From 13 to eight. Although, for the mathematically minded, there’s an obvious problem at the heart of Ocean’s 8. And it’s this: if you count up the confirmed members of the crew put together by Sandra Bullock’s Debbie Ocean for a high-stakes jewel heist, they only number seven. Helpfully Olivia Milch, who co-wrote the script with director Gary Ross, has an answer for that. Less helpfully, it’s as opaque as the plot of Ocean’s Twelve: “I bet you can deduce from the bill of actors who and what an eighth might be,” she tells us. Which clears up nothing. THE FIRST TIME Ari Aster watched his debut movie, Hereditary, with an audience, he assumed they “thought it was a piece of shit”. It was at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, whose attendees should absolutely be the market for the film’s brand of emotional horror. THERE WAS NO Best Picture nominee this year more divisive than Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Fans were knocked out by its thrilling performances, pungent humour, narrative brio and moral ambiguity. He isn’t even given a name — the credits refer to him simply as Lead Cenobite — but you never forget a face. Especially that face, with nails hammered into it at regular intervals. TO PARAPHRASE CLINT Eastwood’s Blondie from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, there are two types of people in the world: those who love the film’s climactic triangular shoot-out and those who haven’t seen it. The last part of Sergio Leone’s ‘Dollars trilogy’ culminates in perhaps the greatest set-piece of his career: a three-way Mexican standoff between goodie Blondie, baddie Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef) and ugly Tuco (Eli Wallach) at Sad Hill cemetery. Yes, I did. I wanted it to keep going because it was exciting and I wanted Poseidon to make a giant wave. Which was your favourite bit? One bit I liked was the pool of water and the gods could look down on Jason and see what he was doing. It was like they were watching TV. What didn’t you like? The harpies looked a bit fuzzy.
