THIS POST-WWI drama looks beautiful, thanks to some dramatic lenswork in a knock-out location (set in WA, it was actually filmed in New Zealand and Tasmania), and to its very photogenic stars: Fassbender is stoically handsome as the war-shattered veteran, and Alicia Vikander is ridiculously, luminously lovely as his wife. Certainly Cianfrance thought so: half the movie is in super-close-up. But for a weepy, it lacks punch: it all feels like a two-note concerto – there’s impending tragedy, and tragedy – so that you don’t get the emotional barometric changes that elicit a real response.
