THIS SUMMER MARKS THE 14TH EDITION of our annual A-List—and it’s our 35th-anniversary year here at ELLE DECOR—so evolution was very much on our minds as we put this issue together. Over the list’s decade-plus history, it has been, first and foremost, a celebration of the talents who lead this industry and who inspire us day in and day out with their creative vision. In its first year, it numbered only 25 studios. Now it includes more than 101 firms working in residential interiors, architecture, and landscape design, five of which we’re welcoming this year. But one thing has stayed the same: The list is an all-out lovefest for designers who are operating at the top of their game while actively engaging with the broader design community. They’re pitching stories,…
WATCH PALACE INTRIGUE From the Eiffel Tower to the Seine, this summer’s Olympics will feature landmarks all over Paris. But it’s hard to beat the setting for fencing and tae kwon do: the city’s newly restored Grand Palais, the Beaux Arts confection of steel, stone, and glass built for the 1900 Paris Exposition. François Chatillon, the architect tasked with the renovation, spent four years getting it picture perfect. “We had 1,100 workers on the project,” he says. While only the nave and main staircase will be visible during the Games, a full restoration is underway. The hall will soon be in use for everything from Chanel fashion shows to Paris+ par Art Basel. “She was like Sleeping Beauty,” Chatillon says. “We just had to kiss her.” —IngridAbramovitch grandpalais.fr STAY OHAYO,…
Audemars Piguet knows what makes an icon. The Swiss brand’s 1972 Royal Oak, designed by Gérald Genta, is one of the most emulated timepieces in history. Its latest collaboration, with Australian couturiere Tamara Ralph, presents a stylish departure in aesthetics from the original, blending high fashion with haute horology. Limited to 102 pieces, its 38.5mm, 18-karat frosted pink-gold case houses a flying tourbillon complication and a sculptural stepped dial with layers of brown, bronze, and gold. Ralph’s version of the Royal Oak, while reverent to the classic, already stands alone, an icon unto itself.…
When the architect Frank Gehry debuted his design for the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris in 2014, he began an association with the French luxury house that, like his buildings, has taken some surprising turns. A definite curveball: this handbag, with a blackened-brass handle shaped like a crocodile. One of 11 in a capsule collection by Gehry, the Capucines BB Croc debuted at Art Basel Miami Beach last December and is now available for preorder. Gehry—who has also created perfume bottles and a watch for Louis Vuitton—says the handle was inspired by a reptilian sculpture he fashioned for the London restaurant Sexy Fish. Making a handbag is very different from designing a building, but Gehry was pleased with the results. “They were able to produce things,” he says, “that were…
When designer Athena Calderone first entered her new wood-paneled apartment in TriBeCa, she felt a sense of premonition. Calderone described the space as having a regal atmosphere reminiscent of Vienna, a city she’d never visited; this feeling led her to delve into researching various European design movements, from the Vienna Secession to French Art Deco. One particular drawing by Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann, featuring carefully sketched, symmetrical blue squares for a housing complex, left an impression on Calderone and served as a powerful creative spark. It all directly influenced Salon, her new collaboration with Beni Rugs. The collection comprises a dozen styles and marks the second time that the lifestyle guru has teamed up with Beni—as well as the first time that the brand has introduced low-pile rugs into its…
How far would you travel to witness a solar eclipse? As evidenced in April, people will traverse the planet to experience the rare spectacle when the moon passes in front of the sun, casting a shadow on the earth. For others, the dazzling corona is always with them—on their wrist. This remarkable achievement is brought to you by the American jewelry house TACORI, which has flawlessly captured the cosmic phenomenon in a series of elegant 18-karat-gold bangles, aptly named Crescent Eclipse. Like the cosmic anomaly, the collection symbolizes renewal, with glittering diamonds mirroring the corona’s shimmering curves. Handcrafted by master artisans and available in various widths, colors, and finishes, these TACORI pieces can be mixed, matched, and interpreted in numerous ways, embodying different meanings and significances for each wearer—much like…
