Nowhere but New Zealand The rowi is one of five species of chicken-sized birds known as kiwis. All are endemic to the country of New Zealand in the Pacific Ocean – in fact, the kiwi is New Zealand’s national bird. Rowi were once more widespread, but now most of them live only in the coastal settlement of Ōkārito on South Island. To see these elusive kiwis, you need to stick on your walking boots and head inside the forest that borders Ōkārito’s enormous lagoon. CASE HISTORY Romania’s Hoia Baciu (say “Hoya-Batchoo”) Forest has all sorts of spooky stories swirling around it. They say it’s a place where people mysteriously vanish. One legend tells of a shepherd and his 200 sheep disappearing without a trace! Another story claims a five-year-old girl wandered into the forest and disappeared – only to show up again five years later, looking exactly the same. Could this forest hide a portal to another dimension that sucks people in?
