My name is Mandrillius sphinx but you can call me Mike for short.
As you can see from my marvellously multicoloured face, I’m a mandrill.
Mandrills are the largest of the Old World monkeys, which makes me sound rather grand. (Which, of course, I am…) Look how BIG I am – I'm twice the size of the girls and they’re not nearly as decorative.
We males mature at around nine years old. I remember this was a tough moment in my life. It was the first time I was out on my own, in the equatorial African rainforest. I was foraging for nuts and berries, maybe the odd insect (I’ll eat anything, basically) but, mainly, I desperately wanted to impress the lady mandrills.
