FISH CAN DO MATHS!
Yes, fish can do sums – it’s o-fish-al! It’s impressive, too, because they don’t even have fingers to add up on. Scientists at the University of Bonn in Germany proved that zebra mbuna and stingrays can work out sums between one and five.
They trained them to learn that blue symbols meant adding one and yellow symbols meant taking away one. So, if a fish was shown a card with three blue shapes, they’d add one to three and swim through a gate displaying the card with four shapes.
If they swam through the correct gate, they got a reward. The fish got it right between 69 and 94 per cent of the time!
