As I am writing this column, daylight savings time is about to end in California, during the first week of November. But based on the magazine’s production schedule, when you’ll have this copy in hand, we will already be in the middle of the holiday season. Can you believe how time flies? The year 2023 is around the corner; we have only one month remaining this year. In 2022, we enjoyed plenty of memorable moments. To the Zenith Hi Jon, my name is Michael and I love VW Beetles! I have a Type 1 with a 1998cc and single-port heads. I want to use a single Zenith 32NDIX carb. Which size venturis and jets should I use? And what is the best isolated or plenum manifold? My carb is made in France and has a slot in the base. And it has only 2×19mm venturis. Br Michael New Orleans, LA Michael, the standard venturi for a single Zenith is a 24mm, so yours are abnormally small. Some tuners will actually go with slightly bigger ones too. Stahl’s Automobile Collection

Midwest Scene As automobile enthusiasts, we naturally gravitate toward museum collections to further enjoy our hobby, especially when the weather begins to turn. Such was the case this past October, when the Stahl’s Automobile Foundation hosted “Night at the Museum”, with the opportunity to view their impressive collection only by the light of their vintage neon signs! Stahl’s Auto is the private collection of Ted Stahl, a businessman from Grosse Pointe MI. Stahl invented the iron-on T-shirt transfer, and his firm now specializes in heat-print and digital technologies. He has been collecting rare antique and classic automobiles, as well as automobile-related collectibles and memorabilia, for over 30 years. GNRS Welcomes VWs Again! February 3-5, 2023 Back in January 2022, something magical happened. Pomona, California’s prestigious Grand National Roadster Show (GNRS) welcomed air-cooled Volkswagens in one of its buildings. Not familiar with the event? Founded in 1950, the 3-day happening remains the longest continuously running hot rod show in the world. Exhibiting a car (hot rod, custom, truck, race car, VW etc.) during this extravaganza represents quite an achievement for any car owner. The current iteration of the show typically gathers 600 cars and motorcycles in seven buildings, in addition to another 800 to 1200 vehicles outside, as part of the “Grand Daddy Drive-In” on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. THE EUROPEAN BUG-IN 9

After we wrapped up our visit to the Hessisch Oldendorf Vintage VW Show in Germany, we stayed in Europe for another week and drove to the small town of Chimay, in the southern part of Belgium. Our final destination: one of the biggest VW events in the World, the European Bug-In (EBI). EBI was created by three hardcore VW enthusiasts from Belgium influenced by California’s VW scene. Frederic Peeters, Mike Walravens and Kobus Cantraine approached Rich Kimball of Periscope Enterprises (who has been the organizer of California’s Bug-In for over five decades) and asked for his approval to use the official Bug-In logo, featuring a ladybug. TYPE 3 DAYS REVISITED

Type 3 Day, a one-day affair, was the brainchild of hotVWs’ inhouse Type 3 whizz, RK Smith, who daily drove a well-known ’67 Squareback during the ’80s. In 1985, his enthusiasm led him to envision a So-Cal get-together solely devoted to Type 3s, with help from another hotVWs staff member, Jeff Walters. A true Volkswagen Bus devotee, Jeff handled our Transporter Talk column at the time, which still exists today. He was also a major player in the Society of Transporter Owners (SOTO), a large club behind numerous Type 2-only events every year. SOTO Meets often took place at the Claremont High School in Garden Grove, where hundreds of Bus fans invaded a large grass area. BUILD A LONG STROKE 2276CC MOTOR PART2

Even though our machine shop order stated, “clearance for stroker crank", there are always a few issues that this automated process can’t take care of. For one, our rods are the “big bolt” type (3/8″), which are a little wider on the big end than some earlier versions. Laying the crankshaft assembly into the case it became apparent that a little touch-up grinding was in order. The bolt area of two rods were hitting the case top. These areas were marked with some blue Dykem to spot the contact points. Since the offending area involved the bottom corner of the rod’s big end, a little material was sanded off these areas. If you do have to make this modification, it’s a good idea to re-check the rod balance. The camshaft…

Sometimes it’s to someone looking to sell their VW, other times, it’s from someone that is looking to fill that spot in the garage and rekindle some memories of the past. So, we spent all of 2022 discussing the various regular models of Buses. For 2023 we will bounce around a bit. There are almost endless models that were either coachbuilt specials that were available through the dealership network, or coachbuilt specials that were built for individual customers, or Buses that were modified by the customers themselves. THE CARTEL RETURNS TO REDDING!

Redding dragstrip has gone through a pretty extensive facelift since 2019 when the Cartel had been there last. The bigger upgrades include 40 acres of new asphalt to pit in, concrete k-rail in place of the old steel guardrail and, most impressive, a whole new concrete racing surface. These upgrades made for a safer racing environment and needless to say the racers were excited to be one of the first events to happen on the new track surface. And the Fast4Cartel brought the same excitement, enthusiasm, and family feel that they always do. The experience encouraged Domingo to build his own project car, based on a Fastback as well. He drew his inspiration from a great sketch by artist Thom Taylor - his work regularly graced the pages of hotVWs Magazine back in the ’80s. A 1966 model served as foundation for Domingo’s vision. It had a rusty pan, hence the use of a ’68 IRS unit, lowered three notches in front and two in the back. INGAP VOLKSWAGEN AUTO SET

THE VINTAGE TOY BOX The Volkswagen Beetle originated in Germany but that did not stop the toy manufacturers all over the world from producing their Volkswagens in miniature form as well. The Italian manufacturer Industria Nazionale Gioccatoli Automatici - Padova (INGAP) produced injection-molded model cars in various scales. INGAP made a very nice set of cars in a smaller l/68th scale. The 12 cars came in a small box with a very colorful box top that was printed in three different designs. The box top had a scene of several cars driving along the motorway, with a bridge and underpass. Opening the box top revealed the 12 cars tucked nicely away in the small box. Shows Must Go On

Back in my 20s, I had the possibility to go to an air-cooled show every weekend over the summertime. Sometimes I could even choose between two or more events over one weekend. And they were not further away than 125 miles. That was in the 1990s, when the air-cooled scene was at its pinnacle. All these meetings had more or less the same concept. One of the countless VW clubs rented a piece of grassland for a weekend, brought toilet and shower trailers, set up a big party tent, and filled it up with tables and benches. In addition to that, they provided a beer stall, an additional one for Bratwurst, and if they were counted among the wealthier clubs they could afford a live band for Saturday evening. And…

Sang Kim always liked classic VWs, but he never thought he would own and drive one until his brother-in-law, Jared, gave him a ride in his 1978 Camper. They both later took the vehicle on several camping and road trips, and he was soon hooked on Volkswagens and started thinking of getting one. Being attracted to the Salzburg Rally 1303S Beetle, Sang toyed with the idea of owning a rally-style Beetle, which you usually didn’t see in Hawaii. A TRANSFORMED TRANSPORTER

Erik Thorsen’s father Gregg purchased the ’60 Transporter in 1971 as his daily driver and traveled the US with it heavily. He also grew organic produce and used the Double Cab to both sell out of at local farmer’s markets, as well as making home deliveries. In the late ’80s, the Bus was showing heavy wear with rusty floors and rocker panels, so it was retired to Gregg’s property in Missouri to slumber. Both of Erik’s parents would drive and enjoy VWs as he was growing up, so he naturally picked up the love of German tin himself as well. Bruce Meyers created a revolutionary thing when he designed and shaped the first of the Manx bodies, and the waves that spread from that initial creation continue to give the world quite a ride. While the traditional Manx bodies represent that vast majority of production from B.F. Meyers and Company, they were not the only ones to carry the Meyers badge. Partnering with city officials, the 34th Annual Michigan Vintage VW Festival was held concurrently during the Bavarian Festival in June, and became, for the first time in the club’s history, a full 3-day event. The Friday Night Street Party saw dozens of vintage Volkswagens parked along Main Street, amidst hundreds of German fans wearing lederhosen and dirndls, listening to fabulous live German music.
