As I write this, we are westbound on Route 66, just outside of Tucumcari, New Mexico. We left Chicago seven days ago in our motor-home, for one last grasp of the Mother Road before time and decay leave nothing behind.
For those who are unfamiliar, Route 66 was one of the original highways in the U.S. Highway System, established in 1926, and went on to become legendary. Arguably the most famous road in America, Route 66 began in downtown Chicago, and ran through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and finally, California, ending at the Santa Monica Pier. It covered 2,448 miles as the Main Street of America, through every small town from here to the West Coast. There was even a TV show based on the road…
