On August 26, 2020, our VW community lost one of the greatest VW artists and a dear friend – Tim Leventry. Tim was such a talented artist. Even if you didn’t know him, you have likely seen some of his work. Many of his hand-lettered Buses are on the road today, especially in Southern California, including our own hotVWs “sales flap” Bus. He was a true artist in every sense of the word. Tim was the man behind many VW-related company and event logos, such as Big Wednesday, the So-Cal Vintage Treffen, and many more. Our OCI Media company logo is also Tim’s work. Burly has helped Bonneville’s land speed organizing team over the years, until 1990 when he decided to enter his own car – a ’74 Super Beetle – in the legendary competition. There are rare KdF Wagen tin model cars (Split Window Volkswagen Sedan as we know it today) in collections. And then there is this one featured in this magazine. I have been interested in vintage Volkswagen model cars for about 45 years now and have seen this rare VW tin car only a couple of times. In fact, when I saw it the last time, I happened to have my camera ready and went to work taking a few close up photos. From the little information that was available from the owner, this was an example of a KdF Wagen toy produced by the German toy manufacturer named Siegfried Günthermann Blechspielwarrenfabrik, Nürnberg, around 1939. In this article, I would like to talk about shocks. What kind, what do they do, and what brands. So the first thing here is what kind of VW do you have? What do you do with it? What kind of terrain do you live in or play in? Last how old are you? These are the questions I ask if you are trying to purchase shocks from me. Brian Murphy got interested in VWs at an early age. His family is from California and moved to Arkansas when he was five years old. Since he and his parents had numerous relatives and friends still in California, they took yearly vacations on the West coast. During these trips, Brian would stay with his dad’s best friend, Luis Riveria, who owned a bunch of VWs. Brian remembers a ’59 Euro Beetle, an Oval, and a Bus in particular. When he turned 14 and got closer to getting his driver’s license, he asked his parents for a Beetle. They started looking for potential candidates in Arkansas and only found 1970s models. Many longtime hotVWs Magazine readers will recognize the name Barry Burlile, better known in the Volkswagen world as Burly. His signature has appeared countless times in our pages, with his expertise ranging from car features and a monthly column, to technical articles and FYI updates. But there is much more to his story. In fact, we chose to devote three sidebars to different aspects of his life, which have helped shape the VW scene. Barry Burlile has been involved in numerous fiberglass kits, mainly through his company Burly Industries. Meant to fit Beetles, they took their inspiration from the hot rod world, including the ’32, ’37 and ’40 Ford-style hoods/grilles. It all started with a sketch in 1965, followed by a more refined illustration in 1970, ultimately leading to the construction of Burly’s first Volks Rod in ’78. Lake Pleasant once again proved to be an excellent venue, as Volkstock campers began to arrive on Friday, greeted by sunny skies and nearly 80-degree temperatures. Before long, the designated camping area was teeming with activity as folks were setting up for the weekend’s entertainment. Nearly one hundred VWs filled the sold-out campground! In the adjacent showgrounds, a variety of performers kept the early crowds happy with live music throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Saturday morning welcomes the big crowd for the car show. VW owners from all over Arizona made the trek to Volkstock, with many of the Dry Heat Panzers Club coming from Tucson. Return to Sender Mr. Chabot, question about cylinder head temperature monitoring… I am sure there are several opinions on what folks prefer to use to monitor engine wear/performance. What might be the best or recommended spark plug position to install the sender under? I know Number 3 runs the hottest but is the hottest cylinder the best to use when assessing wear/performance? It would certainly be the safest bet, I guess. In your experience, are you aware of any modifications folks typically make (either to the sender or head) to enable the sender to fit through the opening that leads to the spark plug hole? Or will it all fit just fine? (FYI... I will be installing this on a Type 1, 1968 dual-relief engine, stock, with dual carbs.) Thanks…

I have seen thousands of Buses in my travels, at shows, out in the field, and in some stellar collections of original condition Type 2s, including a few which have traveled less than a thousand miles since new. It is very rare to see a Transporter which is truly untouched. If a Bus was unlucky enough to leave the dealership without the salesman selling the original owner a few accessories, that owner probably stopped by his local Pep Boys or Western Auto to buy a few goodies and started drilling holes into the vehicle before they made the first payment on it. In December 1974, HotVWs’ Tom Chambers called Burly requesting a drawing of a Cal Look-style Bug, for the magazine’s first California Look issue. He was home sick at the time, but still managed to supply the piece, later retouched by Art Director Lane Evans. Burly continues: “The Euro mirror idea came from Mark Buehler’s ’51 and the nerf bars from Mike Lemire’s ’56 [both featured in the February ’75 article]. BRMs were on the majority of ‘Lookers’; so, they were the easy choice for rollers.
