Converting from 6 volts to 12 volts - Part 3

In this article, I’m going to talk about what it takes to convert your car from the old 6-volt system to 12 volts. In last month’s issue, we talked about the coil, choke, and alternator. This month, we are finishing converting from 6 volts to 12 volts. Type 3s can skip this as there is no tin or fan. This tin is different than the 6v tin and, no, your 6v tin won’t work. The way it goes on is the flattest plate goes on first. If it has a hole in the face, that hole goes down. Place it over the two studs of the generator/alternator, then the small ring. Sometimes, I get the feeling that we never learn. We all love new things, but when they age, we lose interest in them. But a decade or two later, we start to appreciate those things again. Just look at cars. A Porsche Boxster 986 was hot when new in 1996. Twenty years later, it is as cheap as it can be, with reasonable cars fetching around 10 grand. 277mph for the World’s fastest VW-powered Race Car

Perfect salt, the best seen on the Bonneville Salt Flats in more than a decade, created ideal racing conditions for this year’s Southern California Timing Association Speedweek, allowing maximum speeds on all four race courses. Three streamliners went over 450 miles per hour, with Dave Spangler driving Turbinator 2 to a new all-time wheel driven exit speed of 470.605 MPH. Five Volkswagens took advantage of the smooth salt setting six new records. It was about the same time during Joey’s youth that his Dad purchased a ’56 Oval Bug, but it wasn’t for himself or for Joey. It was destined for his sister’s boyfriend. The annual Spring Meet at Kelley Park (aka Kelley Park Show) is the main event hosted by the Golden Gate Chapter of the Vintage Volkswagen Club of America (GGCVWCA). IGNITION TESTING BASICS

Ignition coils come in all shapes and sizes, but the one us VW folks use is generally shaped like a cylinder, has three connections, and a mounting bracket. But, not all coils are created equal! If you’re stuck in Utah, or any other non-VW friendly state, you might be forced to buy a replacement coil at the local auto supply store. If this is the case, you should be prepared to do some checking on the counter before the sale, and carry your own multimeter! The coil is basically a transformer that steps up the 12 volts in your car to around 25,000 volts or so. This high voltage is what your engine needs to jump a spark plug gap and ignite the fuel mixture. The coil has two circuits…

36HP Distributor is locked up

Aftermarket Governor I have built a log splitter with a stock 1600 single port engine, electronic ignition, Bosch 009 distributor, blue coil and a header exhaust. At first, I had it idling at 2500 RPM and it would just bog down under a load. I found an aftermarket governor to apply the throttle when necessary to hold a constant RPM. Now it works great. I have the governor set at 2200 RPM. What RPM would be the best for the best power range? How many HP would I have at that RPM? Replacement Parts

Our Buses rarely have all of their factory original parts. Volkswagen replacement parts have evolved over time. They may be the same or vastly different from original, while functioning just fine. Most people want many of their parts to be stock original looking, but that is not necessarily what VW intended. Volkswagen was building cars to be used and driven, so they would supersede parts with improved versions. A good example is bumpers. In early ‘59 model year, VW replaced the early style “pressed” bumpers with the improved heavier duty later-style bumpers. The company quit making the early models since the new ones would fit onto early Buses. SHOW STOPPER

In 2014, Jason Smith began searching for a new Volkswagen project. Jason, who already owns a ’63 Turbo Ghia and ’65 Notchback, found this Oval in Orange County, California. The car had several unique parts – a good platform for the Vee Dub he had in mind. He transported his find to well-known Henry Marchena Restoration in Fullerton, California. Henry and his crew began the restoration by disassembling the vehicle, placing the body on a rotisserie where it was corrected to factory standards. He then sprayed four base coats of Glasurit Agave Green, three coats of clear and allowed the paint to affix. After being color-sanded, he applied two additional coats of clear for a showroom finish. BUGORAMA SOUTHWEST

Arizona is an interesting place when it comes to weather. March 18th, the day of the Phoenix Bugorama, I woke up to six inches of snow on my Bus. I was parked in Flagstaff, Arizona, 170 miles north of Phoenix. A couple hours later, when I arrived at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona, just outside of Phoenix, it was much warmer, with the sun shining and temperatures in the 70s. The jig is designed to hold a new frame head in such a manner that the welder has unrestricted access. It also ensures that the correct angle of the front axle cradle is maintained. Distracted Driving

Sad news to report. Last week, my Herbie was the victim of a distracted driver. He was rear ended at the Woodward Dream Cruise while we were dead stopped on the road. The driver “claimed” he was “adjusting his shoe”. Yeah, RIGHT! The man was wearing loafers – what’s there to adjust? He also showed absolutely no remorse or empathy – not even an “I’m sorry” came from his lips. And – get this – his name is Herbert! Herbert hit Herbie?? You can’t make this stuff up! Thankfully, it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. We’re okay, plus he didn’t hit Herbie full-on, he only clipped the right rear at about 5-10 mph. But it was enough. Organized by Jeff Newcomb and Jeff Kramarsic, The Fast4Cartel revolves around bringing VW drag racing back to less complicated days, where the racers had more say and the winners weren’t defined by their pocketbooks. The Cartel wanted to try their hand at tweaking the system. It began with the line of communication created by Brian Watts on XtremeFlat4.com, and evolved further in the Fast4Cartel Facebook group. In 1993, the company was bought by HASBRO, Inc. TOY NOMURA, like many other Japanese toy manufacturers, produced toys for the USA market and used the toy importer CRAGSTAN, based in New York.
