You might not know his name, but Chris was the owner of one of the biggest VW wrecking yards, “Small Car Connection Inc.”, and the CEO of “U.S. Autobarn Inc.”, which was also one of the largest genuine air-cooled Volkswagen parts importers from VW Brazil and Mexico. Something is wrong in the booming air-cooled Volkswagen scene. Buses easily reach the 50K mark, Beetles before 1968 fetch prices between 10 and 15 grand - at least. And we don’t even talk about Fridolins, Razoredges or Lowlight Ghias. But what about the average Type 14 Ghia? I remember the '80s and early '90s when everybody wanted to have a sporty Volkswagen. And the sportiest of them all was the little coupe from Osnabrück. No Beetle, no Type 3, let alone a Bus had the same attitude. Of them all, the most favored cars were the 1960 to 1969 Ghias with their cat-eye-shaped taillights and the round, classic-looking bumpers. Farmington Dragway in Mocksville, NC was the place to be on October 15th for the 28th running of SEVWA’s Fast Times at Farmington. This location has been the scene for Volkswagens since the late ’80s. The event was lost for about two years or so in the early 2000s, until SEVWA / K&L Motorsports brought it back to life in 2002. These last 15 years have come and gone, but this last event proved to be the best yet. Fall 2017 brought out their biggest crowd yet, with just over 2000 spectators, 80 racers, over 50 new vendors/swap meet and over 250 cars in the show area. In the Pacific Northwest, an informal group of vintage Volkswagen enthusiasts has been meeting at shows for years. This spring, several of these friends decided to drive their cars in a caravan to San Jose, California to attend the Kelley Park Vintage VW show. The drive and nightly camping followed in the footsteps of similar trips the group had taken in years past. The total trip for some in the group resulted in over 2500 miles with a few cars coming all the way from Canada. All this driving was accomplished without any major mechanical issues amongst the caravan. Master Cylinder Do I need a different master cylinder if I put disc brakes on the front of my '67 Beetle? Can I convert to front discs using stock parts or do I have to use aftermarket components? I've read that some people have had problems with the fit and quality of aftermarket kits. Is upgrading the rear drums to large Type 3s a good combo with the front discs? Should I stay with the wide 5 bolt pattern or convert to the later style? We would say it’s good news, at least better than last time... In last month’s issue, in the Semaphore column, we shared shocking news about how Texas’s DMV has outlawed any rebodied vehicles and has started to revoke titles and registration for Dune Buggies in the state. Texan kit car enthusiasts started lobbying the State to relegalize the vehicles. Faron Smith, the Texan dune buggy enthusiast who organized “Save the Texas Dune Buggy” Facebook group had a meeting with the Texas DMV Board on December 7th. Our hope seems to get closer to what we are wishing for, reaching somebody who has a sense of automobile culture in the USA.
