Tshifhiwa Matodzi, former chairman
Regarded as one of the masterminds, Matodzi had control of several accounts at VBS, including Vele Investments, Petronet, Venmont, Robvet, Khavo, Scorpion and Tiisang. These accounts controlled hundreds of millions of rand, some of which Matodzi used to bribe his co-accused, prosecutors allege. Prosecutors also accuse Matodzi of offering bribes to influence them “to act in a manner that amounts to the illegal, dishonest exercise”.
Matodzi told the court he couldn’t afford the R100 000 bail set by magistrate Brian Nemavhidi because he was unemployed and owned no assets. However, he posted bail a few days later.
