The Black Panther movie has been a game changer. The same can be said for its soundtrack – which blends rap, R&B, gqom, Afrosoul and Mzansi-influenced hip-hop by artists from the US, UK, Ethiopia and South Africa. Ten years and 18 movies in, this is Marvel’s first soundtrack to feature original commissioned music.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 soundtracks, with their classic rock and pop hits, were money-spinners for the studio, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe films have been criticised for often-bland scores.
