Having recently completed the 12-month Facebook Community Leadership Program, Western Australia’s Bec Johnson was the only Australian recipient of a fellowship. And, as one of just 100 people across the world to be part of this global group of community builders, Bec received $50,000 to help grow the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre in Perth.
The centre, which opened in 2015, is becoming known as a one-stop shop for people with type 1 diabetes and their families. Today, the facility offers those living with diabetes – as well as their family, friends, teachers and employers – access to diabetes education, dietetics, psychology services, drop-in HbA1c testing, training for schools and babysitters, numerous workshops and classes, flexible insulin therapy programs, social events and camps.
