Not every tree is ideal, or even safe, for treestand deployments. Some aren’t convenient. Others are downright dangerous. Stay away from trees that are:
DEAD: Some trees are dead. Never hang stands in these. Most ash trees? Yeah, those are accidents waiting to happen. Don’t hang in or even next to these, or any dead tree.
LEANING: Trees that are leaning aren’t safe for climbing or hunting in. Instead, find a good, straight, safe option.
TOO SCALY: Some trunks are too scaly and have bark that’s peeling or falling off. Sycamore, pine, paper birch, and river birch are just a few examples.
TOO SMOOTH: Some trees have very smooth bark. These are dangerous for treestands, especially climbing treestands. Some species to stay away from include beech, birch, hornbeam, and more.
