Leading heavy road transport equipment manufacturer Bruce Rock Engineering (BRE) has officially opened its Perth metropolitan workshop facility in Forrestfield. The Smith Truck Group will be taking a refreshed look into 2017 with a new two-storey dealership in Victorian’s central-west. Allowing the truck sales company to overlook the Western Freeway, a key freight route between Adelaide and Melbourne, the new location places the Smith Truck Group at the gateway to Ballarat, the third most populated town in Victoria behind Melbourne and Geelong. Scheduled to open in November, the new dealership will further accommodate the group’s stock of used prime mover and semi-trailer units with the addition of an internal showroom and sales, parts and servicing facilities. Fleet owner Toxfree has found that signing up to a campaign aimed at saving the lives of the most vulnerable can reinforce a company safety message it sees as crucial to proper internal operations. The waste management firm teamed up with socially conscious truck maker Volvo earlier this year to support its ‘Stop, Look Wave’ safety campaign that highlights awareness of children and children’s awareness around trucks. The first ever BP Show and Shine held at the Perth Motorplex in WA had plenty on offer for those who wanted to look at shiny and not so shiny trucks, both old and new. With an ultimate goal of zero accidents with its products, the company is continuously developing systems to make that happen. Its campaign is a guide for transport companies and schools, which includes an interactive 30-minute slideshow starring an animated truck driver named Tim, who also warns about blind spots and trailer sweep on corners. The slideshow is accompanied by an interactive story told by the facilitator, specifically designed to grab the attention of school children. It also doubles as a good general introduction to trucks for kids, and can be presented by trucking company representatives in the presence of class teacher or parents. Western Australia’s fickle spring weather was initially reasonably kind as the old load luggers rolled into the Bunnings car park. Some were highway heroes of yesteryear, others more humble haulers. But, there was plenty of old iron on show. Forty-five trucks, big and small, rolled up. Some on trailers, others roared into town with Jake brakes blaring. Model Ts and Chevs from the 1920s were on hand as well as the usual smattering of classic American iron from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.
