You see a lot of the country. You meet a lot of nice people. All eyes were drawn to D&K Towns’ sparkling 2016 Kenworth T909 when it rolled into the Oaklands Truck Show in the Riverina, New South Wales, on Sunday, March 20. Driver Simon McIntosh was being congratulated on the appearance of the new truck long before he accepted trophies for both Truck of the Show and People’s Choice. The winning T909 was purchased from Hallam Truck Centre. The customisation is the work of Simon’s brother, Luke McIntosh, from Kyzer Kustoms of Shepparton. Simon’s boss, Daryl Towns of Wonthaggi, will have the honour of driving the prize-winning truck. It will pull a refrigerated single trailer in Victoria and New South Wales. The long wheelbase helps, and it’s got a nice interior. Although the Sterling brand is fast becoming part of truck history, Graeme Witnish’s 2008 model looks as good as the day it first hit the road. Graeme, based in Donnybrook, Western Australia, is the Sterling’s second owner, having had it for close on four years. First owned by fuel haulage specialists Maktrans in Toowoomba, it has now clocked up more than 1.3 million kilometres. Graeme says Maktrans had around “seven or eight” Sterlings. “They look after their gear and this one has the 54-inch sleeper, and a 14-litre Detroit under the bonnet set at 550hp,” he says. Three Kenworths from the Dawson’s Haulage fleet were polished and sparkling at the Oaklands Truck Show on March 20. Their drivers (pictured above from left) Justin Twyford, Shane Mitchell and Wayne ‘Marto’ Martin, were happy to pose for a photograph in front of the trucks. And they were proud to accept the trophy for Best Small Fleet at the end of the day. There was no hint of the tragedy which lay ahead. In the early hours of the following Thursday, March 24, Wayne died in a two-truck collision near Deniliquin. News of the accident prompted an outpouring of grief for the 27-year-old truck driver from Barnawartha North.
