A wave of red moved along Jakes Gerwel Drive yesterday as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) demanded the keys to impounded taxis from the City of Cape Town. The much-anticipated protest started on the field near Vangate Mall in the morning from where they proceeded to the Maitland Traffic Impound Facility. The EFF’s “shutdown” went ahead, albeit at a much smaller scale, after several organisations pulled out on Sunday because they didn’t want to be associated with any potential violence. The police fraternity is in mourning after another two of their officers were killed in the Western Cape over the weekend. Yesterday, Police Minister Bheki Cele and national commissioner Fannie Masemola, visited the bereaved families of the two slain cops. The officers, a woman and a man, were both off duty when they were murdered in two separate incidents on Saturday and Sunday. Security One of the deceased has been identified as Warrant officer Lindela Mraqisa, who was part of the security detail of deputy police minister Cassel Mathale. Mraqisa, who was attached to the Western Cape Protection and Security Service Division, was among the five people shot and killed in Gugulethu on Saturday.
