MISS South Africa, Lalela Mswane, made the top three at the controversial Miss Universe pageant which was held in Eilat, Israel, yesterday.
The 24-year-old was second runner-up with Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu taking the crown and Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira the first runner-up.
Harnaaz, 21, is doing her masters in public administration, as well an actress and plans to “use her time as Miss Universe to advocate for menstrual equity”.
Lalela, a law graduate had gone against the wishes of the South African government, who had withdrawn support for the Miss SA organisation for their decision to participate in a pageant in the “apartheid” state.
