A lawyer who also acts as a magistrate has been given until Monday to submit affidavits to the Durban High Court to defend himself in allegations of contempt, as he failed to pitch for the trial of his murder accused client in July 2025. Attorney Sithembiso Nkatha is representing Sbonelo “Madanon” Wiseman Shangase, 32, who is charged with 15 murders. The trial was scheduled to proceed in July; however, it was delayed due to Nkatha’s no-show in court. The investigating officer had spotted him earlier in the court building, but when proceedings were called to order, Nkatha had vanished. Shangase was to appear alongside his co-accused, Thalente Mkhize, 36 but due to Nkatha’s absence the trial could not proceed. Shangase told the court he could not afford Nkatha’s fees and…

While the Presidency and State Attorney seek to recover more than R28 million spent on former President Jacob Zuma’s legal fees, counsel for Zuma questioned why he should face the brunt, while the state officials who in the first place unlawfully granted him the money for his defence are not being held accountable. Advocate Thabani Masuku told the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, on Thursday that Zuma was not granted the money in the first place through corruption. His legal fees were paid from the State coffers following wrong legal advice to the state. While Zuma did benefit from the money, it was not his doing that it was given to him. The National Treasury finally vacate its historic 40 Church Square, Pretoria, head office following several Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) complaints by staff about water leaks and malfunctioning air conditioning systems. It will be moving to the Public Investment Corporation (PIC)-owned Riverwalk Office Park in Ashlea Gardens, Pretoria, in December. The offices of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, his deputies David Masondo and Ashor Sarupen and Treasury director-general Duncan Pieterse and other divisions will also move.
