IN GOOD news for spinning enthusiasts in Cape Town, a cooperative agreement between non-profit organisation Kaapstad 021 SPIN and the City’s Recreation and Parks Department will see a section of the Lentegeur Sports Ground being made available for practise purposes. The agreement will allow for a portion of the sports ground to be utilised, with support from the Lentegeur Municipal Facility Management Committee. It is the first agreement of its kind and will also act as a pilot to consider additional sites around the metropole, where members of the spin fraternity have indicated high interest. THREE men have been handed heavy sentences for gender-based violence for separate incidents in KwaZulu-Natal. Regional National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said: “The Verulam Regional Court sentenced two men aged 62 and 34 years to a term of life imprisonment for each of the three counts of rape they committed in August 2023 in the Sokombo area of Ndwedwe.” Ramkisson-Kara said that on August 25, 2023, the victim, aged 26, and her friends were at a tuck shop near her home, where they were drinking alcohol. The two accused were also at the tuck shop, sitting away from the victim and her friends. She knew the men as they were related to her. Police recovered pure cocaine worth an estimated value of over R80 million which was concealed inside a container at the Durban Harbour, yesterday. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police received information about a vessel which left Brazil at the beginning of November and was carrying pure cocaine which was disguised as kidney beans. “The vessel, which came to South Africa via another country, was monitored until Saturday, 30 November 2024 when it docked at the Durban Harbour. The identified container was taken to a warehouse on South Coast Road in the Bluff area for a proper search. “During the search, eight bags of crushed pure cocaine were found and according to the documentation, the shipment was destined for Johannesburg,” Netshiunda said. As of the end of April 2024, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that more than 120 million people worldwide had been forcibly displaced due to human rights violations, conflict, persecution, violence, and major disruptions to public order. In its Global Appeal for 2025, the UNHCR highlighted that of this number, over 60 million people are women and girls, placing them at heightened risk of gender-based violence (GBV).
