Food, glorious food. I’ve eaten some of the best cuisine of my life on cruises, from sizzling steaks cooked al fresco under a starry sky, to sushi as fresh as any you’d find in Tokyo. And don’t even get me started on the puddings (no seriously, don’t). Yes a cruise is the opportunity to try some of the world’s finest gastronomy (though even burgers taste better at sea for some reason) and dine in restaurants created by Michelin-starred chefs; but it’s OK, because calories don’t count when you’re on a ship. Oceania Cruises, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, has announced its new OceaniaNEXT initiative, a sweeping array of dramatic enhancements designed to elevate every facet of the guest experience. The first initiative to be undertaken is the $100 million re-inspiration of the line’s four 684-guest ships, Regatta, Insignia, Sirena, and Nautica, that will result in four better than new ships. It’s a balmy afternoon in Amsterdam and I’m relaxing with new friends and a glass of perfectly chilled Champagne on the deck of Tranquility II. The spectacular seascape of towering snowy white cliffs, rugged caves and roughly hewn archways sculpted by the glittering waters of the Aegean Sea was too beautiful to resist.
