LET’S SAY A few kind words about winter—not everybody’s favorite season unless you enjoy blizzards, icicles, and sneezing. Yes, winter can be pretty bleak. But there’s a bright side: ice-skating, snowboarding, skiing, and beautiful snow-covered landscapes. Not a bad season, after all.
The Anglo-Saxons called January “Wolfmonth,” which suggests they didn’t like it much. The ancient Romans named January in honor of Janus, the god of doorways, symbolizing new beginnings. (Our word janitor comes from Janus.) Figures of Janus show him with two faces, one looking back, the other looking ahead. A nice idea, since January is a kind of hinge between the old year just ended and the new year just begun.
