METALSMITHING: TIPS FOR THE PERFECT CUT! The ability to create shapes in metal is a basic yet important skill when it comes to jewellery making. Best of all, this specialist skill doesn’t require costly tools and can be picked up quite easily. Like any technique, good cutting and filing skills can make all the difference to the quality of your item. Here are our tips for achieving the perfect cut. Cutting metal • Beware of over-filing! You will find that most good quality tools leave the edges of metal straight and over-filing can take away this flush edge. MATERIALS Filigree cuffs 8 assorted cabochon flowers BEADS 3-4 pearls depending on your spaces TOOLS Toothpick (for placing pearls) E6000 glue Pencil and paper STEP ONE Turn filigree bracelet flower side down, roughly trace around the shape of the cuff where you will be doing flower placement. STEP TWO Rearrange flower cabochons on the traced paper until desired look is achieved, start with the biggest on the side for an asymmetrical look. STEP THREE When lay out is decided start gluing by using the E6000 glue dab a swirl of glue on one flower at a time and move quickly as the glue sets fast place biggest flower into position first.
