Mismatch Made in Heaven Turn a motley crew of chairs into a stylish mix using assorted paint colors, just as Brooke Ulrich of allthingsthrifty.com  did. “I’m an avid thrift store furniture browser,” Brooke says. “I honestly use whatever colors I’m obsessed with at the moment and force them to live in the same space. It’s funny how often colors you wouldn’t think look good together actually do.” Warm a Bench Add a punch of pattern to a backless wood bench with vintage-inspired designs and a fun turn of phrase. About five years ago, Carol Holsopple-Froese was walking through her field and spotted a sole pink pumpkin among a new variety of orange ones. To anyone who has battled breast cancer, such an encounter would be meaningful. But this 15-year breast cancer survivor is also a plant breeder and a co-owner of Colorado Seeds Inc. Carol and her husband have developed many plant hybrids, starting in the 1990s with a variety of seedless watermelon. The happy pink accident, however, is the closest one to Carol’s heart. While visiting my husband’s relatives years ago, I admired his Aunt Doris’ collection of hand-stitched quilts. A particularly beautiful one stood out from the rest. After a morning occupational therapy session, Mona Sams is directing her intern in unpacking the van. “That one can go there,” she says. She means that rabbit can go there. Five more await in the van, along with three dogs. Cages clatter and dogs whine, but the ark-on-wheels is actually a little light today. Most days at the office involve the larger members of Mona’s menagerie—a few of the 13 llamas she keeps in Roanoke, Virginia. Through 31 years, Mona grew her fluffy occupational therapy “staff” to include rabbits, dogs, ducks, goats and a sheep, but the llamas and alpacas are the stars. “I’ve never had a child I couldn’t reach with the animals,” she says. PROJECT 1 LEAF WREATH USE WOODSY FINDS TO MAKE A WALL ACCENT WITH THAT FALL FLOURISH. Collect fallen leaves, berry sprays, branches, acorns and pinecones. If needed, gently dry leaves, then lay on paper towels, covering with additional paper towels. Q: How do you make trick or treat time special? When my girls were young, we took them trick-or-treating in reverse. We made Halloween popcorn hands by filling clear plastic gloves with candy corn for fingernails and popcorn for fingers and hands, then tied the top with curly black and orange ribbon and placed a spider ring on the ring finger. We drove all over the countryside to deliver these to our neighbors, many of whom were elderly, and they loved them. They enjoyed seeing how much our girls had grown from one year to the next.
