A Welcome from the Editor One of my favorite summer traditions is the Fourth of July bike parade in Rosemary Beach, FL. We wake up early and head to the town square, where our kids work their magic with crepe paper streamers and I try my best not to micromanage. (Although I am tempted to make the balloon on pg. 13.) It’s followed by a field day of sack races, face paint, and fireworks late enough into the evening that one of my kids usually falls asleep over my dad’s shoulder with a half-eaten ice-cream cone. Before you hit the trails, pack a few doses (one dose=1mg/lb., up to 50mg) of Benadryl in case of insect stings or snake bites and plenty of clean drinking water from home. RETHINK AN OVERLOOKED CORNER Upgrade any bedroom into a bunk room by turning an empty corner into a completely enclosed built-in bunk bed with its own ceiling and millwork endcaps. Painting the room’s walls, trim, and millwork all the same hue (such as this pretty blue) adds warmth and actually helps a small room feel larger. For this Texas room, designer Meredith Ellis also took advantage of the bunk’s end wall by adding built-in bookshelves. BUG SPRAY The most toxic ingredient in many bug sprays is DEET, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea. If your dog mistakenly gets sprayed with a DEET formula, bathe your dog right away with dish soap. Ingestion of anything with a DEET concentration higher than 80 percent can cause more severe symptoms, like lack of coordination, trembling, seizures, and disorientation. WHEN TO CALL THE VET: For high concentrations, seek care right away. For smaller, monitor closely; call if vomiting or diarrhea persist. SUNSCREEN Many contain two ingredients that can upset a dog’s gastrointestinal tract: zinc oxide, which irritates the stomach lining or can trigger a severe allergic reaction, and salicylates, which can cause stomach ulcers when absorbed in large quantities. Long before Kris Kiger and JP Frenza bought the Red Rose Motel and Tavern in Roscoe, New York (population: 541), they had it in their sights. The Westchester County–based couple has been making trips to the Catskills since 1999 and renovated a farmhouse just down the road. Once a beloved dance hall and tavern, the “Rose” had seen better days. “JP always said, ‘I wish someone would buy it and renovate it before it falls down,’ ” says Kris. 1. Magnetic Memory Board Turn an enamel serving tray ($30; amazon.com) into a bulletin board. Paint small wood rounds with craft paint, and glue magnets, for pinning to-do lists, postcards, and photos, to the back with hot-glue. 2. Yarn God’s Eye Arrange two craft sticks in the shape of a cross. Glue together in center. Wrap center a few times, crisscrossing with yarn. Continue wrapping diagonally, weaving the yarn over one stick and under the other, until covered. Add colors by double-knotting the new strand to the previous color on the back of the cross. OBJECT LESSON: Junior Toy Co.’s Metal Lawn Chair WHAT TO KNOW: Brett Anderson founded his Anderson and Vail Stamping Co. in 1925. Four years later, he changed its name to Junior Toy Co. and began making tricycles and wagons. Because sales for both were so seasonal, he needed a way to keep workers busy year-round. Enter the painted metal chair, made of the same steel tubing and sheet metal components as their toys. The company’s “shellback” chair, shown here, was designed in the late 1930s by industrial designer John Gordon Rideout and originally sold for $1.99 at stores such as Sears. As the owners of Company and Cottage (companyandcottage.com) and Isabel’s Market + Eatery (isabelsmarket.com), Chicago-based couple Christine and Gabriel Bridger have made it their business to renovate and rent old cottages across western Michigan. “We pick the homes nobody wants,” says Christine. But when they encountered the 113-year-old barn on a parcel of land on Lake Michigan in Saugatuck Township (population: 3,329), even they paused to consider just how much work it was going to require.
