Feeling fruity
JEWELLER Anabela Chan may be more of a scientist, judging by her astonishing new collection, Fruit Gems, a continuation of her mission to conjure beauty from waste. Following 2020’s Blooms collection—crafted from recycled drinks cans—this new line tackles food waste, inspired by the whopping 44 million tons sent to landfill each year in the US alone. Drawing on ancient foraging and pigment techniques, her atelier cleverly transforms humble spinach, beetroot, blueberries, dragon fruit and more into vivid gemstones, stabilised (by processes including crushing, grinding, simmering, straining, air and freeze-drying) in plant-based bio-resin and polished like precious stones. Four years of meticulous research has also led to Regenerative Gemstones—including a new amber made with autumn leaves and twigs, as well as rose quartz, turquoise, amethyst, malachite and lapis lazuli…
