THE clamour for British land is becoming deafening: 1.5 million new houses, food production, energy infrastructure, wildlife and rewilding—where to put it all? For years, there have been calls for an audit of land, including from Simon Jenkins, who observes that there is now some urgency if Britain’s singular charms are not to be swamped by ambitious development goals (page 42).
