A March sale at Tennants of Leyburn, North Yorkshire, included a collection of 29 silver, brass and other dog collars, ranging in date from 1691 to the early 20th century, and in price from £112 to £5,208. There seems to have been considerable interest from the USA. The top seller was silver, by Garrard-maker of the Iron Duke's crown-in 1859, and was presented by either the 1st Lord Londesborough or his son, the 1st Earl, to an L. Denison, possibly Lilian, a daughter of the Earl. Most had ownership inscriptions, some with variations on the ‘Whose dog are you?' theme.
The oldest was a William and Mary silver collar ( above ), inscribed ‘Miss R Jenkins, Charlton Hill 1691', at £3,100. This owner was presumably a daughter of Robert Jenkins…
