Just over four years ago, we moved to the lake to retire and renovate our 1990s waterfront home. What an adventure it has been! Slowly but surely, we have tackled our list of projects that included painting, flooring, landscaping, wallpapering and a full bathroom remodel. Cozy, cute and inviting, banquettes are a great addition to any cottage kitchen, invoking an Old World feel and brimming with charm. The term originates from the French word for an upholstered bench built into a wall. The French aristocracy made it fashionable to include this bench in dining areas to create an intimate, comfortable seating arrangement and the trend has been popular ever since. Andreina Chirinos Paoli, an interior designer and content creator, styled this beautiful tablescape to recreate summer dining alfresco in Italy for her family and friends. “For me, there is no special occasion needed to design a beautiful table and gather with my loved ones,” she says. Now living in Connecticut, Andreina (@andreinacottage-style) vacations between her homeland, Venezuela, and Italy. She attributes her creativity to her father’s side of the family, renowned plastic artists. “My passion for beautiful tables is inherited from my grandmother and mother, because I grew up in a family in which sitting down to eat at a beautiful table every day was the norm,” she says. ROWS OF COLORFUL BEACH HUTS dotting the coastline is a quintessential British seaside view and there are more than 450 of these huts lining this section of the Mersea Island coast. Local resident Jane Ashmore used to look at them longingly, thinking she would never be able to afford one. Her eventual purchase provided not only plenty of fun-filled days while her children were small, but now that they have flown the nest it has grown into an exciting business. “The huts are quite an investment, but when a friend wanted to sell hers back in 1999, she gave me first refusal knowing how much I wanted one,’” Jane explains. “It really would have been out of my reach had my mum not stepped in to help share the cost,”…

Imagine being surrounded by bright, colorful flowers every day in your life and work. Jane Wittrock is doing just that. She has created enchanting and evocative gardens where visitors come nearly all year round to pick their own bouquets of flowers for an unforgettable experience. Jane lives in the beautiful countryside of Sjælland, Denmark, surrounded by green fields, on a plot of land measuring 21,000 square feet, with most of the plot used for the flower garden. Jane also tends to a wide variety of perennials and rosebeds, but her primary focus is her cut-flower garden. Homes come in all shapes and sizes but sitting on the smaller end of the square-footage spectrum shouldn’t force a sacrifice in design or creativity. In her latest publication, Small Spaces, Big Appeal, Fifi O’Neill discloses “the luxury of less”—or the advantages of packing practicality and personality into a living area that lacks large room space.
