At her two booths at The Fleur de Flea Vintage Urban Market in Louisville, Kentucky, she stocks vintage Blue Willow dishes, chinoiserie items, and furniture and chandeliers she has painted for resale. “I also always try to have one of my paintings and kilim pillows for sale. “I never planned for this to happen,” says Kelli Gaertner when asked about how she established her business, Kanda Candles. When New Jersey residents Courtney Affrunti and husband Bill started looking for a cabin to purchase near Schroon Lake in the Adirondack Mountains, they couldn’t find anything that worked for them. “Nothing was right,” Courtney explains. We asked Chuck Khiel, senior vice president of Fred Home Improvement (schedulefred.com), for expert tips on preserving tile in an older home: • If the tiles are quite dirty, scrape off as much debris as possible. • Sometimes, old tiles just need a good cleaning. A mix of vinegar and warm water does an excellent job of cutting through years of neglect. • Inspect the grout. Scratch out any/all loose grout. Re-grout as necessary. • Once the tiles are cleaned and the grout is addressed, apply a clear tile sealer, which will help preserve the finish. • If the old tiles are loose but not broken, it might be possible to remove one and reset it.
