When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in 2017, Kim and Austin Elizondo anticipated a flood of perhaps 6 inches. As they retreated to their second story, trying to stay calm and entertain the children, the waters continued to rise through the night. Hi friends ! Happy fall! Fall is my favorite time of the year. The crisp air, apple picking, pumpkin patches, fall foliage, pumpkin-spice everything, candy corn, Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving—I could go on and on. I love all the cozy layers, all the varieties of beautiful pumpkins to choose from and decorating my mantel for fall. Earlier this year we completed a DIY mantel makeover, and it has given our living space a whole new vibe. My hubby built the faux fireplace front and mantel, complete with an arch that has my heart! He achieved this look by first building a box “frame” using birch plywood. He then layered trim pieces and kept refining it until it appeared built in and original to our home. When you first walk into my home, you see this little niche at the base of our staircase. It has an angled wall behind, making it somewhat tricky to decorate. However, I love the angled wall and use it as my template when designing what I want to do in this space seasonally. Sears Modern Kit Homes were offered between 1908 and 1942, and over 70,000 were sold during that time. The kits included most of the materials needed to build a home and a 75-page instruction manual. They were assembled onsite and offered the latest technology available at the time, including indoor plumbing, electricity and central heating.
