Family culture and community were a couple’s top priorities when it came to renovating a Newport Beach, California duplex which, in its previous life, served as a frat house and had the dartboard holes to prove it! When they first purchased the residence, the place suffered from boxy and dated interiors and was not suited for entertaining or the multi-generational living situation they desired. So, they turned to designer Mindy Laven, owner of Mindy Laven Home, to achieve their vision of open-concept beach living with accommodations for their close-knit family and love for entertaining. “The homeowners wanted to divide the property into two units,” Mindy explains. “The lower unit is for their daughter and the wife's mother. After the hardship of Hurricane Florence flooding this family’s Wilmington, NC, house, the ensuing remodel gave them back the gift of a bright and happy home. “Wilmington’s record number of sunny days is the main reason why many folks move here,” says interior designer Mary Hannah Giebel, who came onboard in late 2018 to redo the house with builder Stone Development & Restoration. “Our primary aim was to create comfort and durability for the active, young family—they have 2 little kids. When the new owners of this 1975 bungalow enlisted the help of interior designer Michelle Lisac of Michelle Lisac Interior Design to help them craft their dream home, the house was still decked out in its original finishes. “It was a very swanky and groovy 1970s house,” Michelle says, “There was lots of dark wood everywhere.” The now four-bedroom and four-bathroom home is located in the hills of Aptos, California, near Santa Cruz. When you ask someone about the architecture of a historic cottage, there’s usually one answer. For this home in Tustin, California, however, the answer is two-fold. “The house was built in 1889,” says architect Carol Tink-Fox of Stratos Form. “The main house is Victorian Italian, but the front porch was added in the 1920s, and they used Craftsman style for that.” Carol and her team made the home livable for the 21st century while maintaining its doubly-historic curb appeal. Have you ever vacationed somewhere and wished you could live there permanently? This beach house became the primary residence for its owners, but it was not intended to be that way. Instead, a massive hurricane changed their plans—as well as their address. In September 2018, Hurricane Florence made landfall on the North Carolina coast and destroyed many of the homes there, including this one in Beaufort, North Carolina. Over the past year, we’ve been chronicling the room-by-room progress of our Project House 2020, and we are amazed at how it’s come together. This year’s Project House was a collaboration between Cottages & Bungalows, American Farmhouse Style, JJ and Lindsey Morris, owners of homebuilder Scissortail Homes and Rachel Shingleton, interior designer and owner of Pencil Shavings Studio.
