Normally for the annual coastal issue of Cottages & Bungalows I’d be writing about island vacations, summer cottage rentals and beach-side travel. But 2020’s global pandemic has other ideas. We’re experiencing a world we’ve never imagined and changing our behaviors and perceptions in untested ways. And yet gratefully, my message here for this letter is not altogether different from what I’d normally reminisce on in C&B. It’s merely simplified: Home and everything in it is precious. The people, the possessions, the feelings of our homes have become so much more to us since we’ve been safely sheltering in them. WATERMELON SPRITZER (makes 6-8 cocktails) WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • 2 cups watermelon cubes • 1 large cucumber, peeled and cut into thick slices • 1 oz. A weekend home on the edge of an island should have views of both the ocean and the mountains—but if they don’t, it’s time for a remodel. Architects Joseph Herrin and Ben Humphrey of Heliotrope Architects came on board to help a family transform their vacation home on Orcas Island, off the coast of Washington state. “The home sits on a stunning piece of property with panoramic views, yet it did not take advantage of them,” Joseph says. “The bedrooms upstairs had little or no view, and a fireplace and BBQ sat in the middle of the view downstairs with small windows on either side.”The home had other problems too, including outdated finishes, water infiltration and small layouts. Patience is a virtue when buying a project home — or in this case, two. When homeowner Molly Walpuck purchased this Tenants Harbor, Maine, property in 2016, it was no surprise that the land had two little 1950s cottages on it, since the town is known for its vacation homes. At about 450 square feet a piece, a lot of work needed to be done to the existing structures to create Molly’s dream home. After three years of hard work and decision making, Molly and her husband were finally able to move into the main house in October 2019, but not before a complete renovation of the two smaller structures. “I would say my style is more coastal than nautical. If you have kids that will be running back and forth from the beach, you’ll need fabrics that can withstand getting wet, and indoor/outdoor fabrics are the best choice. “We chose fabric that could be beat up with wet bottoms and sandy feet,” says Anne. “There’s nothing precious in the house.” 2. CHOOSE HARDY MATERIALS. When Pete and Angi purchased what would become“the Blue Door Cottage,” they knew it would be a labor of love. For years, they had dreamed of a home on Balboa Island, located off Newport Beach on the southern California coast. The island holds a special place in their hearts, as it's where they met. • If you’re looking to use more than one paint color inside your home, Molly has a trick to ensure your colors don’t clash. “I bought every color from the Benjamin Moore paint card—the one with the different shades of one tone,” she says.
