I love to feed people, and I believe that all great conversations worth their salt take place around food. But this was a different type of fascination. Whether a simple, affordable laminate or a sleek, customizable glass, a backsplash can give a kitchen that extra “oomph” to achieve a finished look. For homeowner Chrystal Urdiales and her husband, Juan, the historical charm of Fredericksburg, Virginia, lured them into the decision to build their own home rather than buy. “We looked at older homes, including old farmhouses, but in the end, we weren’t comfortable with a full gut job so close to my husband’s retiring from the Marine Corps,” she says. “As much as I craved that character older homes have, we decided to build and infuse character on our own. Instead of buying a chalkboard and hanging it on your wall, you can make your own by painting it directly onto your wall. This way, you can make it the exact size you want to fit the space—and you never have to worry about it falling. Note that this project is best done on a smooth surface.
