If you want to add some history to yourhome, think about getting a cellarette. Cellarettes were first used in Europe in the 15th century as a place for pubs to store alcohol. The lid or drawer locked to prevent anyone from stealing the establishment’s alcohol. Cellarettes first appeared in America in the 1700s and were popular with army officers during the Revolutionary War. Soon cellarettes became a common sight in elite homes too. During the Prohibition of 1920s America, cellarettes were often disguised and painted in a hyperrealistic style to look like part of another piece of furniture, like a bookshelf or a regular table. When you are starting from scratch, the kitchen remodel process can be a bit daunting. When the plan is in development, it can be hard to imagine what the finished product will look like. In this fast-paced world, we crave a soft, welcoming nest to retreat to. We love cozy elements in our home, but our dining rooms, which are typically filled with lots of wood furniture, plates and glass, aren’t exactly warm and inviting. So, to create a cozy space that gets used more than once a year, we can add unexpected elements, to trick our brains into thinking our dining rooms are not so practical and cold after all. 1. When choosing your meadow site, look to the landscape for clues on where to plant. For example, the patchy spots of a lawn indicate that there may be too much shade (or too little fertility) to successfully grow a meadow. 2. While meadow gardens are all about the natural look, they still require some planning. Understand your soil and amend it if necessary. Decide which seed mixes are right for both your growing conditions and the look you’d like to generally achieve (color and height). And plan for how you will water them. 3. To select flowers for your own floral creations, or when swapping in different seasonal alternatives, it is useful to keep in mind the different elements needed to create a well-balanced design. In most vase arrangements, I look to work with the following categories: Focal flower: A large-headed bloom to take center stage, such as a rose, dahlia or peony. Secondary flower: Something to play alongside the leader, for example a smaller rose, cosmos, hellebore or lisianthus. Height and texture: A few taller stems to achieve the highest points in the design. Foxgloves, snapdragons and larkspur work well here.
