Given the long history of Doctor Who and the wide range of Britishmade science fiction vehicles over the years, it seems slightly strange that Doctor Who diecast models only appeared around the time of the show’s 40th anniversary in 2003. Unlike contemporary scifi programmes such as Star Trek and Space:1999, the Doctor didn’t travel around in a recognisable spacecraft. His craft, the TARDIS, was stuck in the form of a mundane British police call box. FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY It wasn’t until 2003 that Doctor Who diecast models made it to the market. As collectors we are all susceptible to having our heads turned. You know the sort of thing; you’re looking for one item then… you buy something completely out of your comfort zone. The Matchbox collectors firt with Dinky toys, the figure collectors suddenly turn onto trading cards. I’m more vintage tinplate and diecast but I have been known to stray. It usually creeps up on us without warning too. Or does it? Now, I’ve long been a film enthusiast and working in the graphics industry I always had more than a passing interest in the printed ephemera that surrounds the movies. At the recent Auction Centre sales something of an oddity surfaced: a vintage Steiff Pull Along Seal. This character, in blond mohair, measured approximately 77cms nose to tail and was mounted on a black metal chassis with four blue wheels, shod with white rubber tyres. The seal featured glass eyes, a pink vertically stitched nose, had a pink mouth with nylon whiskers and, amazingly, was still fitted with his (her?) original string and handle. Overall, the toy was classed as being in good condition, albeit with signs of age and use: the tail had a stitched repair while the frame exhibited signs of wear to the paint along the arched handle. We all know someone. That charming friend whom you love to bits, but they have one debilitating flaw. An infinite capacity to shoot themselves in the foot. A refusal to compromise over things the more pragmatic of us would ignore. They are quite capable of learning to use a smartphone, but they won't. They can easily afford one. In most cases, they can't afford not to have one. But they insist on carrying on with a ten year old brick because “it does everything I need it to do”. The phrase ‘Meccano Dinky Toys’ was first used in the Meccano Magazine, way back in 1934. In the same year, a single sheet colour catalogue with 150 different Dinky Toys was published. This was followed up with a two-page article in the Meccano Magazine in the December issue (1934). This is where the advertising campaign really begins and not just for boys, as in 1936 the Dolly Varden Dolls House and furniture items were released. As well as the advertising and news updates in the Meccano Magazine, single sheet catalogues continued to be circulated and were supported by well known outlets. The Coventry Diecast Model Club is the second oldest toy collector’s club in the UK, starting back in 1975 and still going strong today. This friendly club meet at the Midlands Air Museum at Baginton near Coventry on the first Wednesday of the month, and they welcome collectors of every kind of model – it doesn’t have to be diecast. In fact, members have wide ranging interests – tinplate, white metal, plastic and quirky items too. The Coventry Diecast Model Club (CDMC) was founded by husband and wife, Paul and Hilary Kennelly and a few other enthusiastic model collectors living in Coventry. Oddities abounded: how about a Cold War era footpump for inflating aircraft tyres (£15) or a wall mounted change machine (two 5p coins for 10p), also at £15? Kids loved Budgie Toys back in the ‘60s – I know this because I was one of those kids who played with them! One of the reasons they were so popular was because they were cheap. You got a lot more out of your pocket money by buying a Budgie, yet they still had excellent play value. The main drawback of Budgie Toys, however, was their strength. They were brittle, often with no baseplates and had flimsy axles so they never lasted as long as their more expensive rivals. One of my favourites was the Thornycroft Amazon lorry with its rear mounted Coles crane, which always offered great play value. Hi folks! Collecting is often all about nostalgia and thoughts of happy childhood days, and something I spotted at an antiques centre a few weeks back brought so many happy memories flooding back that I just had to buy it. It was a Fordson tractor, similar to the pre-war Dinky Toy version except for the fact that it was a massive thing! Memories of those magical children’s roundabouts on the fairgrounds filled my mind. These chunky tractors always being my choice while my sister aimed for the top deck of the double decker bus (where our mother would never let us go!).
