Special Auction Services was recently tasked with rehoming the John Garside collection. John, as some readers will know, was a leading light at the Maidenhead Static Model Club and sadly passed away in 2021. He was keen on the odd and the eclectic and in that respect, the sale didn’t disappoint. Hi folks! It’s been a long time coming and it’s been an amazing journey. This issue sees me reach that massive landmark of reaching retirement age. But don’t worry, I’m not about to hang up my car boot boots just yet and will be out there searching for bargains the same as ever. Looking back on reaching this ripe old age I have to consider myself lucky to have been around through what I consider to have been the halcyon years of collecting. Those exciting decades when there was so much stuff out there to be discovered. The Auction Centre’s last sale had variety, with a capital V. A Bassett Lowke – Lowko, a rare O gauge 2, or 3 rail running 4-6-0 loco named Royal Scot with operating number 46100 in British Rail dark green livery, caused much interest. This was a limited edition number 18. The locomotive was in near mint condition and came in a wooden box with its original instruction leaflet. It achieved a hammer price of £320 plus commission. A trestle base rocking horse was another fascinating lot. The dapple horse, with brown leather saddle and bridle, was in good overall condition, although a chip to the left ear and a scuff to the right hind quarters were noted. I am still astounded by the sheer ingenuity of our peers who manufacturer all the spare parts that we as collectors often require. Having collected, repaired and sold vintage toys of all persuasions, I’ve often had to seek out spare parts. Whether they’ve been weapons for Star Wars figures or couplings for Bassett-Lowke Locos, at some point I’ve had to hunt them down! In the UK at least, spares support for collectors can be traced all the way back to the Dinky aficionado Dr Cecil Gibson. Indeed, Gibson advertised re-cast steering wheels and headlamps in the back of his seminal Dinky toy book way back in 1966. Throughout the 1970s spares for Dinky, Tootsietoy, Britain’s etc boomed, reflecting the collecting interests of the time. The execution of spares slowly grew…

The recent sale at John Goodwin carried plenty to entice the railwayana collector, with engine shed plaques, cast iron railway signs and even a framed railway timetable poster dated October 2 1944 appertaining to the GWR – this wartime nostalgia sold for £25. Alternatively, how about a brass tram control handle? That realised £30, while a long yellow cast iron plate embossed with Craven Brothers Manchester was bid to £90. On the toy front, there were many lots relating to railways, with Hornby rolling stock and accessories predominant, in both HO and O gauges. This month we meet a club that lots of readers will know all about – and may even belong to. It’s the Gauge 1 Model Railway Association, or G1MRA for short. This month is extra special to them as it’s their 75th anniversary, and they will be celebrating with a 2-day exhibition at Bicester Heritage in Bicester, Oxon on 1st and 2nd October. Tickets are available from their website. For the benefit of anyone not familiar with Gauge One models, they require a track gauge of 1¾ inches (44.45mm) which is generally referred to as 45mm.
