Mexico was originally named New Spain by the Spanish after they conquered Montezuma and the Aztecs in 1521. The area they claimed covered large parts of America north of today’s border, which was only fixed in 1848 after a war with the United States. Mexico declared its independence in 1810 but achieved it only in 1821. A republic was established the following year. Paper money issued in 1823 by the short-lived Mexican Empire and in the same year by the Mexican Treasury can still be found. Paper money was not seen again until the 1860s when private commercial banks started their own issues. To celebrate HM King Charles III’s Coronation, The Royal Mint Experience was open for 24 hours on Saturday, 6 May. During the day, visitors had the opportunity to be the very first to strike their own Coronation 50p to take home in dated packaging to commemorate the historic occasion. Additionally, a temporary exhibition, titled ‘Crowned: The Making of a Monarch’ opened on the same day. Featuring rare coins from The Royal Mint Museum and items that had never been on display to members of the public before, as well as hands-on interactives and a very special photo opportunity, it enabled visitors to discover more about this turning point in the history of the United Kingdom. One of my greatest achievements in numismatics was being involved with the planning, funding and execution of the Smithsonian Museum of American History numismatic exhibit. The exhibit, Value of Money, opened in 2015 and is one of the most popular destinations in the museum. This is a museum which has over 4 million visitors per year. Because of this exhibit, more people are introduced to the hobby of numismatics than anywhere else in the world. National numismatic exhibits are an important part of expanding the hobby in the United States, Europe and Asia. In the first century BC the borders of modern France would have fitted comfortably within those of ancient Gaul, home to dozens of Celtic tribes including the Ambiani, the Belgae, the Atrebates and the Parisii. Each tribe issued its own currency with designs influenced by the coins of Ancient Greece, which had come to the region hundreds of years earlier with Greek traders and colonists (see figures 1 and 2). The Romans waged war on Gaul for more than a century until Julius Caesar overcame the greatest Gaulish leader, Vercingetorix at Alesia in 52BC. Coin Hunter is dedicated to modern British coins, and so is aimed squarely at collectors who specialise in the recent flurry of commemorative coins issued by The Royal Mint, celebrating subjects as varied as the London 2012 Olympics, Sir Isaac Newton, and Paddington Bear. Collectors often specialise in medals to a particular regiment, surname or campaign. This author is a regimental collector, but with a couple of ‘side collections’ relating to other aspects of the hobby that provide variation from a principal collecting theme. The subject of this article is Henry de Teissier, who served as a junior officer in the Bengal Horse Artillery during the Sikh Wars of 1845-1846 and 1848-1849, ending his career as a full General and a Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery.
