During World War II (1939–1945), the United States and Japan fought for control of islands in the Pacific Ocean. After the Imperial Japanese Navy bombed the U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, Japan began an intense offensive, successfully invading a number of islands. Six months later, the United States launched a counteroffensive. In August 1942, American troops landed on Guadalcanal, one of the Solomon Islands (BELOW). The fight for control of that Pacific island lasted six brutal months. In the end, U.S. Marines prevailed, and the Japanese abandoned their position.
