The Santa Fe Trail began at Franklin, Missouri, in 1821. By 1827, most traders jumped off at Independence, Missouri. Independence is located about 100 miles west of Franklin. The trail cut through the present-day states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and New Mexico.
After traders established the route of the Santa Fe Trail, the trail also became the route followed by mail stages (1850), the telegraph (1868), and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad (1880).
It took travelers about two months to complete a one-way, 870-mile journey from Independence, Missouri, to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pack mules each carried hundreds of pounds of goods. Teams of oxen pulled freight wagons loaded with an average of 3,000 pounds of cargo. Caravans averaged about 16 miles a day.
