The “People of the Longhouse.” That is how the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca people collectively refer to themselves. The Colonel, the squirrels, and I wanted to learn more, so we explored their website at www.haudenosauneeconfederacy.com. We learned about their history, culture, clan system, symbols, and ceremonies. We also read about some mistaken concepts. For example, the Colonel was surprised to read that all native people did not live in tepees. The Haudenosaunee lived in bark-covered longhouses. I learned that the Haudenosaunee initially helped the early settlers overcome the hardships of their new life in a new land. The squirrels liked to read about their clan-based society.
