Archaeology is the study of prehistoric people and cultures through the examination of artifacts, monuments, or remains of sites. It is made up of two ancient Greek words: archaios, meaning “ancient” or “old,” and logos, meaning “word” or “speech.” In ancient Greece, archaeology meant a “study of ancient things.” The people who lead such studies are known as archaeologists.
