Diggory goes to the meadow every day with Mary and her sheep. He often wonders what the sheep are good for. All they do is munch grass and bleat baa.
Diggory, of course, is very useful. Some days, he chases a naughty fox away from the meadow. Some days, he chases a lost sheep back to the meadow. But mostly he keeps Mary company.
On chilly days Mary warms her hands and feet by snuggling them into Diggory’s fur. He doesn’t mind, but he likes warm days better. Then Mary’s hands are free and she can read to him.
One morning Mary surprises Diggory. Instead of going to the meadow, she takes the sheep out of their pen, one at a time, and cuts off their woolly coats.
