So, many space foods are dried on Earth and stored in special packets. Some, such as dried apricots or pears, taste good right out of the packet. Twelve men have walked on the moon. They were all part of NASA’s Apollo program, which ran from 1961 to 1972. Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first people to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969. In this photo of Buzz, you can also see footprints the astronauts made. Their footprints are still there today. On the moon, there is no wind or water to blow or wash them away. People have been looking up at the night sky since ancient times. They learned a lot just by looking with their eyes. They found that some groups of stars looked like connect-the-dot pictures. They called these groups constellations. They saw that the stars all seemed to move together across the sky. Well, almost all. Instead of staying fixed in one constellation, some of the brightest stars drifted from constellation to constellation. People called these wandering stars planets. They watched the moon and saw how it seemed to change shape from one night to the next. They counted the days from one new moon to the next and called that time a month. From 1981 to 2011, NASA astronauts flew in space shuttles to reach outer space. The reusable shuttles launched like a rocket and landed back on Earth like a glider. Each shuttle had three main parts. Make your own paper space shuttle. 1. Cut out all the pieces along the pink lines. 2. Roll each rectangular piece around a sharpened pencil, with the orange end near the pencil eraser. Tape the edges together to make a long tube. Make sure you don’t tape the tube to the pencil. 3. Twist the top end of each tube around the sharpened end of the pencil to make the nose cone. 4.
