Is your school made of bricks or concrete blocks? Many are. But some classrooms in Guatemala and El Salvador were built a different way—with bottles full of trash! Hug It Forward bottle schools use plastic bottles, trash, and lots of community helpers. Let’s see how they do it! First, kids and other helpers pick up trash. They’ll turn plastic bags and chip wrappers into eco-bricks. Each classroom takes about 3,500 eco-bricks to build. That’s around one ton of trash! To make eco-bricks, the kids stuff empty plastic bags and chip wrappers into cleaned plastic bottles. Hopperville needs a new school. The architect has drawn plans for a school that will have two stories, a playground, and a parking lot. A crane with a wrecking ball knocks down this old building to make room for the new school. Surveyors measure the ground to make sure the school is built in exactly the right place. An excavator digs a large hole. Dump trucks take the dirt away. When the hole is done, workers dig a trench around the edges and line it with boards. A truck pours in concrete, which is very strong when it dries. The school will be built on the concrete foundation. Trucks bring lots of steel beams. Spade bits are also known as paddle bits. They are good for quickly drilling large holes in soft wood. Twist drill bits look a little like corkscrew noodles. They’re the most common bits for home use. They can be used on wood, plastic, and metal. An auger has an edge that spirals around in a corkscrew like on a twist bit. But the twisty part is usually much wider on an auger. The stuff being drilled rides along the wide spiral and out of the hole. This auger has sharp edges that cut through ice.
