As some of you will no doubt have spotted already, senior Classic & Vintage Commercials contributor Nick Baldwin passed away on January 10 2014, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer just before Christmas. Nick’s wife Julie told me by email of his passing just as I was signing-off the February issue. At the same time, she attached the copy for his final article for CVC and the last piece that he wrote for anyone. He had, apparently finished this with help from long-term friend and former National Motor Museum manager Roger Bateman just a day before his passing. Arrangements for the 2024 Historic Commercial Vehicle Society London to Brighton run, and in particular the new start at Brooklands are “moving forward well” according to chairman Fraser Clayton. Writing in the January-February 2024 issue of the HCVS newsletter, Fraser confirms that a large area of the famous Finishing Straight section of the original racetrack will be made available for participating vehicles to park up on before heading down the road to Madeira Drive. The 2024 event takes place on Sunday May 12. Vehicles will begin to arrive on the Saturday and be available for public viewing by museum visitors, and after 2pm on the Saturday, HCVS members will get in for half price on production of their membership cards. Nick Baldwin’s first job was in Land Rover’s experimental department. One year later, just 17, he was editing ‘Vintage Commercials’, a small-circulation publication published by North London Artists. From this, he moved to staff positions with IPC, initially on Autocar, then Commercial Vehicles and Motor Transport. After leaving IPC in the late 1970s Nick became the B in MHB Publishing, one of the pioneers in old-lorry book publishing. He went on write numerous books on cars, lorries and commercial vehicles including from 1974, the iconic Observer’s Book of Commercial Vehicles. His magazine work was equally prolific. His accurate, well-researched but also entertaining writing appeared in magazines ranging from Stationary Engine to Supercar Classics, and including Practical Classics, Diesel Car, Bus & Coach Preservation, The Automobile and Kelsey Media publications Tractor…

British lorries were the focus of attention at British Commercial Vehicle Museum at Leyland in mid-August with approaching 50 vehicles being displayed in the nearby car park. As well as the vehicles themselves, there were stalls on site, including club stands from REVS and the Foden Society. There was a good crowd in attendance too, with the added attraction of the museum itself.…

‘Four-by-two’ tractor units were also available at 42 tonnes gcw (HA4227 etc) on a wheelbase choice of 3 or 3.5m while the engine choice consisted of the Cummins NTC355E with ratings of 273 or 308bhp plus the fully-rated NTC355 with 340bhp. The latter two engines were both turbocharged and aftercooled. Then came 6x4 tractors which were too heavy for normal UK hauliers but, like Bedford’s KXX8 (TM4200 6x4), sometimes found a role in Cat 1 or Cat 2 heavy haulage. The 6x4 tractors were on a 3.35m mean wheelbase and had a gcw rating of 42tonnes. Engine choice consisted of the NTC355E or NTC355. Many people assume that once a vehicle has been restored, that’s the job done for all time. Yes, there’ll be routine maintenance, and depending on post-restoration mileage and usage, some mechanical parts will need changing too. But a second full restoration? The J Type was a completely new design, but several major items would come from the common parts bin. The original intention was to use larger version of the new flat-four engine being developed for the Morris Mosquito (which of course became the Minor), but of course that never happened. In October 1948, two vans were hand-built, one of which was displayed at the Motor Show in Switzerland and the Commercial Transport Show at Earls Court. Full production didn’t get underway for another year though, due to the post-war steel shortage. Kings Lynn-based Anglia Car Auctions first classic sale of 2024 saw more than 300 vehicles and items of memorabilia go under the hammer over the weekend of January 27-28. As always here there were some very good prices and also some bargains, though some observers did think that there was a slight softening of prices overall for some stuff, especially vehicles from the 1950s and early 1960s. The Leyland Society have announced that their 2024 annual gathering will, as it was in 2023, be held at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland, Lancashire, on Sunday July 7. 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of a significant Leyland product, the Ergomatic cab. Introduced on Leyland, AEC and Albion trucks in 1964 the ‘Ergo’ marked a significant forward-shift in thinking, with driver comfort and convenience being significant aspects of the overall design. Attendance by lorries with Ergomatic cabs at our event would be especially appreciated to help celebrate this milestone. Nowadays nostalgia is moving into 1980s and even the 1990s, as fewer and fewer enthusiasts can remember the 1950s and even the 1960s. Every decade that goes by brings change and what seems modern or recent to some can be historic to others. When lorries like Renault Magnums and ERF E-series are looked upon as ‘vintage’ classics it brings it home just how quickly the transport scene moves on. In ‘PD’s Archive’ I try to cater for a wide range of different age groups by showing some pictures from the 1950s while moving on into the ’eighties and ’nineties and even the ‘noughties’! The Bedford TK (covered in the April and May 2022 issues of CVC) leant its cab to two beefier brothers – the Bedford KM and the 4x4 M-Type. The heavier duty KM, announced in 1966, was not initially referred to as a TK variant, as apart from the cab, it was a completely new design. The maximum gross weight for two-axle goods vehicles on British roads was then 16tons, the KM designed accordingly. There were also tractor units to haul gross combination weights up to 22 tons (24 tons from 1967, and 32 tons from 1972-74). Compared to the TK, the cab had twin headlights and a double-bar front bumper, plus ten-stud wheels with bigger tyres. The engine was a 466cu.in.
