BROADCAST ENGINEERING MUSEUM TO OPEN The Broadcast Engineering Conservation Trust are, as their name implies, a charitable organisation dedicated to the conservation and preservation of TV and radio broadcasting equipment from times past, and their collection comprises all manner of equipment including, of particular relevance to CVC readers, eight period outside broadcast lorries. Anyway, the trust have just announced that they have secured premises at Hemswell Cliff near Lincoln where they intend creating a dedicated and working museum – including ‘working’ TV studios and lots of opportunities for visitors to try equipment for themselves, and with the vehicles as a key part of the overall display. INTERNATIONAL’S ‘BUCKING BRONCO’ Like Peter Davies (in December’s CVC) I well remember International Harvester’s fruitless attempt in the mid-1960s to enter the UK truck market. I was technical editor of the monthly Commercial Vehicles at the time and headed up the A1 to Doncaster to road test the bonneted Loadstar in its artic form. It was hitched I seem to recall to a single-axle flat platform semi-trailer built by the long-forgotten HWP Trailers, also based in Doncaster, and the outfit was laden to its plated 24ton gcw.It was unquestionably an eyecatching weirdo rig. Few if any of the middleweight Loadstar’s bonneted contemporaries, notably from Bedford or Ford, saw service as tractor units on British roads. NOVEMBER 11-13 THE LANCASTER INSURANCE CLASSIC CAR SHOW WITH DISCOVERY Back after a break in 2020, the NEC Classic Car Show returned, with some rather fine commercial vehicles, in 2021. Peter Simpson reports… After taking a break last year due to we-all-know-what, the Lancaster Insurance Classic Car Show with Discovery (better known to most as, simply, the “NEC” Classic Car Show), returned with a bang for 2021. This is generally considered to be the premier classic car show, and it always attracts strong support from the whole classic car movement. This year’s show was a good one – very good in fact – and while numbers did seem slightly down on pre-pandemic 2019, that’s hardly surprising given that this show had a shorter leadup than usual. FIAT’S FRIENDS AND FOES Pt2: Nick Baldwin continues the story of Fiat’s far-reaching involvement in th European commercial vewhicle market, and not just via Iveco… We left the story last month with Astra becoming increasingly reliant on Fiat, or perhaps one should say, IVECO power. IVECO had been formed in 1975 as a heavy vehicle business incorporating Unic, which had belonged to Fiat since 1966, OM, Lancia Special Vehicles, Magirus Deutz and Carelli (previously encountered as owners of CAMB). Perhaps unsurprisingly, Astra joined this motley collection in 1986 to become the group’s equivalent of Scammell or Kenworth’s off-roaders. Magirus-Deutz parent Klöckner Humboldt Deutz had held a fifth of IVECO’s shares but had become dismayed that its engines scarcely got a look-in and had pulled out in 1980. Funnily enough, one…

BEDFORD KM SKIP LORRY SUPER SKIP! Simon Sleep’s 1967 Bedford KM skip lorry has been a familiar sight at many lorry events in the midlands and further afield. Peter Simpson learns a little more about this fine and impressive restoration. Warwickshire-based Simon Sleep is, by any measure, a lorry enthusiast of the first order. By day, he runs Kenilworth based Warwickshire Waste, one of the area’s leading waste disposal and skip hire companies. 52 year old Simon is very much a hands-on boss, too, and as well as owning the business, he drives the lorries alongside the drivers he employs. But away from work, he also owns several preserved vehicles, one of which, is the fine restored 1967 Bedford KM skip lorry seen here, a lorry which has been a…

BUFFALO TRACKS… As we reported back in June and August 2021, the Crowland Buffalo LVT Association dug a WW2-era ‘Buffalo’ amphibious landing craft has dug a WW2-era Buffalo landing craft up from a field in South Lincolnshire, where it had been buried since 1947. Since then, much progress has been made on restoring the vehicle to full working order. Structurally, the vehicle seems to have survived pretty well, with the main hull being in generally good condition, and all-through rust restricted mainly to the lighter upper-sections. The gearbox is being restored by David Brown gearboxes, and the Association were able to locate, and have shipped to them from America, two replacement radial engines. Work on the main vehicle has now stopped for winter, but volunteers have taken away many smaller…

ALBION CHIEFTAIN FT37N CLASSIC CHIEFTAIN RESTORED On very slight positive of the 2020 and 2021 Covid lockdowns was that they gave many owners an opportunity to get their restoration projects completed. One such is Anthony Barton – known universally as Bill – whose 1951 Albion Chieftain FT37N made its post-restoration debut at the Cromford Steam Rally back in July, and certainly got a lot of attention. Bill’s Albion’s, registration number JTM 402 and chassis number 73053D was new on May 16 1951 to London Brick, and ran out of the firm’s famous Stewartby works in the Marston Vale, just south of Bedford. The Albion was with the London Brick company until 1964 when it was bought by Edward Pattinson of Station Garage at Leigh, Stoke-on-Trent. “He ran lorries with his…

FIAT AND FRIENDS I was very interested to see Nick Baldwin›s article on FIAT and related marques in C&VC, December, 2021. The SAIM company to which Nick refers were also famed for their conversions of two-axle Lancia trucks into eight wheelers (brochure attached). Nick is correct that the first Astra dump trucks incorporated military parts, in fact these included AEC Matador chassis and axles in the earliest models. The CVS Company mentioned in the article went onto produce multi-axle steel works and crane carrier chassis, and this concern exists today as CVS Ferrari who specialise in the construction of container handling equipment for ports. The OM Titano dumper pictured on page 63, is indeed a pre-1967 model, being shown at the Turin Show of 1961. Richard Stanier…

BREWERY ‘OLD DRAY NO 4’… Though this Minor pick-up was built here and looks at British as the product it advertises and carries, much of its working life was spent on another continent, as Russ Harvey explains… The Minor pick-up you see before you resplendent in the superb livery of the West Berkshire Brewery, was originally built for export, and exported when new to North America. It has been a superbly restored by the current custodian Minor LCV Register stalwart Steve Kirby from Stockcross, in Berkshire. CLOSE-UP Classics on SCAMMELL ROUTEMAN As we start Scammell’s centenary year, Peter Davies begins an in-depth analysis of the Watford firm’s famous eight-wheelers of the 1960s. This year, 2022, would have marked the centenary of one of the UK’s most famous lorry manufacturers. That manufacturer is Scammell Lorries Ltd of Tolpits Lane, Watford. Sadly, along with many other British makes, Scammell ceased production in the 1980s. While the company was best known for its highly innovative artics and specialist tractors, Scammell was also a significant builder of rigid eight-wheelers, in fact the very name ‘Rigid Eight Wheeler’ was coined by Scammell. OPEN SPRING CITROEN Mike Neale tracks down a real rarity among 2CV commercials… The Citroen 2CV was announced at the 1948 Salon de l’auto in Paris, going on sale in 1949. The first Type A cars had a 375cc air-cooled, flat-twin engine driving the front wheels, which equated to two horsepower on the French ‘Cheval-Vapeur’, or CV scale. This allowed the car to accelerate to the giddy maximum speed of 69km/h (43mph). Later the engine was enlarged to 425cc and subsequently to 602cc, which actually equated to 3CV, but the car’s model name was never changed. The car had a full length, roll-back canvas roof, not for sunbathing but to allow oversized loads to be carried. These were very much intended as utilitarian vehicles. At the October 1950 Salon at…

MODEL CORNER FORD 5/7CWT SIDEVALVE VANS Pt2: Mike Neale looks at models of the 100E-based 300E vans. Ford’s modern-looking 100E car range was launched in late 1953, with the two-door Anglia going into production in October and the four-door Prefect in December. The engine, however, was still an 1172cc sidevalve unit, albeit a completely different one from the sit-up and beg cars – the only common factors were the layout, bore and stroke. In July 1954, the standard Thames 300E (RHD) or 301E (LHD) 5cwt van was introduced, replacing the sit-upand-beg E494C Van. This had twin rear doors with small windows, small tail lights, the horizontal three-bar grille from the Anglia and a painted front bumper. Rear bumpers, a passenger seat and passenger sunvisor were all optional extras. The petrol tank…
