Comment Yippee! It’s certainly good to, finally, be out and about again and meeting friends and associates face-to-face once more; I only hope that it lasts! So far, the 2021 show season has certainly proved a busy one; because it started a little later than usual, a lot of events which normally happen earlier have had to reschedule, meaning most weekends there’s a choice of things to do. This, along with some natural and fully-understandable reticence among some people to start mixing just yet, has meant reduced numbers at most shows. That’s unavoidable; none of us can be in two places at once, and enthusiasts are having to choose. NEWARK IN NOVEMBER… As noted in this month’s editorial lead, an unfortunate consequence of the 2021 show season effectively starting late has been that with some events having had to vacate their traditional early-season dates, there have been a few clashes. However, one event is back this year which, because it’s happening in November, shouldn’t be affected by this. The Newark Tactor & Heritage Show, which takes place at Newark Showground (just off the A1) is running over the weekend of November 13-14. Though primarily a tractor event, this show always attracts strong support from the classic lorry fraternity as well, and in total more than 1000 exhibits are expected. FRANK’S 100TH… Mark Wilkes has, once again, organised a surprise ‘birthday celebration with a difference’, this time the lucky recipient was retired S. Jones of Aldridge staff member Frank Hicken who joined the company in 1946 as driver and retired in 1991 as Transport Director, and had turned 100 a couple of weeks before. The event was attended by many of Frank’s former colleagues along with company chairman Michael Jones who gave a presentation. We will be running a full report on this event in due course. PD’s archive I know some people like very old lorries while others prefer newer stuff. Perhaps it depends on their age group. There are others who value lorries of all ages. Personally I normally like most post World War II lorries and even a few pre-war motors. This month’s choice should include something to appeal to everyone as it spans the period from the 1950s up to the early 1990s.…

NEWS ALVAR FITCH Sadly, we must report the death of well-known Bedford enthusiast and restorer Alvar Fitch on August 22, aged 79. Based in the North-West, Alvar Burton Fitch was born into a transport family as his father H. B. Fitch had set up a coal merchant’s business I Cheadle. In time, Alvar took over the business and quickly became a fan of the Bedford marque. In time, with demand for coal in decline, he moved into more general haulage work, still with Bedfords, and he went on to buy and operate several. On retirement, he switched emphasis and moved into the preservation side, where the knowledge, experience (and, in a few cases, the stock of spare parts he had built up over a lifetime) were much in demand. I started work in 1948 as an apprentice mechanic with a Vauxhall/Bedford main dealer and have had a close association with Bedfords all my working life. One of my last projects, while working for a large County Council, was the specification and purchase of this Cambridge built TL 4x4 in 1995.
