I ’ve written before, in other channels, about the idea of a smart motorway. Many road users see them as a good thing, with the dynamic speed limits reducing bottlenecks, monitoring for safety, and who don’t think we need something as outdated as a hard shoulder because cars don’t break down any more. Using that wasted space is therefore a good thing. On the other hand, consider the deaths caused by the lack of a hard shoulder. Recently a pensioner died trying to climb the barrier to safety, when his car was hit in a live lane. A passenger also died. There’s also the Big Brother element of surveillance, and the fact that regardless of modern capabilities, a million cars in Britain are over the age of 40 years old.…
